CC: We know you are a Student in Birmingham. Where and what do you study?

PH:  I’m reaching the end of my four years at Aston University, studying Business & Computer Science. The time has flown by (especially the year I spent on my Placement, working for Churchcentral) and my intention is to stay in Birmingham to continue to be a part of what God is doing here.

CC: What is it like being a Christian at Uni?

PH:  Being a Christian while at University has definitely been a lifestyle choice. I make no secret of my beliefs, and my friends accepted me like that. I’ve found that many students are spiritually open and willing to debate and discuss Christianity. However, it’s not always been easy but at last I have managed to get two of my friends to agree to come on an Alpha Course!

CC: What have you seen God do on campus while you have been at Uni?

PH: God is certainly at work on the campus, especially at times when groups like Agapé and the Christian Union have been active in mission. I am certain there’s a time of reaping ahead at Aston – as Jonny Mellor prophesied the other week ‘there has been lots of seed sowing at Aston University; now it’s time to reap the benefits of this labour’. The start of the Alpha: course near campus although a small step is a highly significant one.

CC: What is it like being a student at Churchcentral?

PH: Student life in Churchcentral is brilliant! There’s always something going on, and it’s good to be in a church setting which is young and vibrant and yet which contains wise and mature Christians. Student lifegroups are where it’s at, and the Loft (our fortnightly gathering on the Birmingham University campus) has taken off with some great times of worship and teaching. With so many great families in the church we get to share fellowship with them in their homes, enjoying their hospitality and being included in their lives. As a student in Churchcentral you can be fully involved in church life and part of the wider loving community with our own unique contribution to make.

Spur One Another On…

January 21st, 2011

Hebrews 10 throws out clear challenge: “…and let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another…”. This comes after the writer reminds the Hebrews of a God who promised and is faithful!

Following Jesus is not a solo project! We are supposed to do it in community, with others around us, encouraging, helping, spurring us on!

If you are a student at Churchcentral the student weekend away is an excellent opportunity for all of this. From the 18th - 20th of February it is a chance to get away, have a brilliant time developing and deepening relationships with each other while totally focussed on our God who is faithful in every way. Year after year students return having made great friends and having heard clearly from God. Many last year described it as a “must”. It is a weekend jam packed with fun, food and good company. It has been an amazing success in the past and this year is going to be no exception.

Book in this Sunday with a £10 deposit and get the whole weekend for the bargain price of £49! It’s your last chance before the price rise. For more details talk to Steve and Danielle Wheeler.

Students: The Loft

November 9th, 2010

What is the Loft? Is it a large empty space used for storing old and disregarded household items, or maybe funky coverted apartment unit? Then again, is it a reference to the upper room where Jesus and the disciples shared the Passover meal?

If you are a student then The Loft is an exciting new project that has been set up to encourage, build up and equip Churchcentral students. Running every other Sunday in the Beorma Bar on Birmingham University campus the vision behind the Loft is that of student workers Steve and Danielle Wheeler and it is their passion and heart for students that has really driven this project forwards.

Since its launch at the beginning of term, the Loft has seen a healthy mix of both current Churchcentral students and newly arrived freshers socialising, relaxing and learning more about God together. The first week was kicked off by Jonathan who brought a powerful message that was both relevant, encouraging and clearly speaking to many that were present. Since then as a group of students we have enjoyed in depth Bible studies, powerful times of worship and have really experienced God pouring his blessings upon us.

Most recently the Loft enjoyed a visit from internationally renowned DJ Moyma for an evening of good music, good company and good fun. This was a brilliant chance for students to, relax and get to know one another whilst doing their best to impress on the dance floor!

By providing a safe environment in which students are able to practice and explore their spiritual gifts, the Loft seeks to help prepare and equip students to survive university life as a Christian, helping them to reach out and to share the gospel with their friends. Come along at 6:30pm next Sunday and check it out for yourself.

Feature: Students

October 1st, 2009

If you are a new or returning student to Birmingham, welcome to Churchcentral! We currently have around 50 students from Aston, Birmingham and Birmingham City universities who choose to call Churchcentral their home whilst at university. Students are a really integral part of the church, and we are committed to both serving students and seeing students involved in serving the church. We currently have students involved in mid-week Life Groups, Alpha, kids work, music, refreshments, community projects and our technical and practical teams. In some cases it’s students who are heading up these teams! There are loads of ways you can get involved and whether you are in your first, second or final year, we want to get to know you, support you and pray for you during your time here in Birmingham.

Birmingham is the UK’s second largest student city, home to over 65,000 students. Our desire is to fully represent the diversity of our city, so in addition to people from every other walk of life, we would love to have many students from every university, every college and every course in the city, who are impacting campuses with the love of Christ. We believe God has many more people for himself on our campuses. So do join us on our mission to reach the 65,000 Birmingham students and make Jesus the most talked about person on campus.
We have a number of different ways we like to support and get to know you if you are a student. We have “student” Life Groups that are specifically for students. We meet mid-week to hang out and get to know each other better, to worship together, read the Bible and encourage each other in our walks with God. We have meetings that are specifically for students, and for the first 3 weeks of term we are even going to cook you lunch! We want to serve you, get to know you and provide a place where you can get to know others. So please do come and have lunch with us. If you have any questions, anyone wearing a red “Churchcentral students” t-shirt will be happy to help you out.
